Accessing services for children and families
Providers and community partners play an important role in identifying needs and helping families connect to appropriate services. In many cases, referrals can be made directly to service providers. Parents and caregivers may also initiate referrals. The appropriate pathway depends on the level of need and the type of service being considered.
Levels of service and support
Children's behavioral health services are designed to match the intensity of a child's needs. Services may include:
- Low-intensity services (such as outpatient therapy or skill-building supports)
- Moderate-intensity services (including in-home or community-based treatment)
- High-intensity services (including intensive in-home or residential care)
Whenever possible, services should be delivered in the least restrictive setting.
Working together to support families
Effective care depends on collaboration across providers, families, and community partners. Key responsibilities may include:
- Engaging caregivers in treatment
- Coordinating with other providers involved in care
- Supporting families in understanding their options
- Recommending appropriate levels of service
