For Providers & Community Partners

CBHS partners with providers and community organizations across Maine to ensure children and families receive coordinated, high-quality behavioral health services. This section provides guidance on referral processes, service access, and provider roles.

How to Access Services

Understanding the referral and access process ensures smooth coordination of care for children and families. Below is a step-by-step overview of how providers can access CBHS services.

Provider Referral & Access Process

1

Initial Referral

Provider identifies a child/family in need of behavioral health services and submits a referral to CBHS. Referrals can be made by healthcare providers, schools, community organizations, or families themselves.

Provider Action: Complete referral form with child/family information, presenting concerns, and service needs.

2

Service Level Determination

CBHS reviews the referral and determines the appropriate service intensity level based on the child's needs.

Low-Intensity

No Single Assessment required. Direct access to prevention and early intervention services.

Medium-Intensity

Single Assessment required. Community-based therapeutic and support services.

High-Intensity

Single Assessment required. Intensive services, crisis intervention, or residential care.

3

Single Assessment (If Required)

For medium- and high-intensity services, a comprehensive Single Assessment is conducted by a qualified assessor to evaluate the child's behavioral health needs and determine appropriate services.

Provider Role: Coordinate with CBHS to schedule assessment. Share relevant clinical information and collaborate in the assessment process. Assessment results inform the Individualized Service Plan (ISP).

4

Service Planning & Authorization

An Individualized Service Plan (ISP) is developed collaboratively with the family, provider, and CBHS team. Services are authorized based on the ISP.

Provider Role: Participate in ISP development, contribute clinical expertise, and ensure services align with child/family goals and needs.

5

Service Delivery & Coordination

Services begin with ongoing coordination between CBHS, the provider network, and the family. Regular monitoring ensures quality and effectiveness.

Provider Role: Deliver services as outlined in the ISP. Maintain communication with CBHS and other providers. Document progress and report any changes in the child's needs or circumstances.

When is the Single Assessment Required?

NOT Required for Low-Intensity Services

Prevention, early intervention, outreach, and basic support services can be accessed directly without a Single Assessment.

!

REQUIRED for Medium-Intensity Services

Community-based therapy, behavioral support, and care coordination require a Single Assessment to authorize services.

!

REQUIRED for High-Intensity Services

Intensive home-based services, crisis stabilization, and residential treatment all require a comprehensive Single Assessment.
